UN Secretary-General Identifies Climate Emergency as One of the Sectors Demanding the Urgent Intergovernmental Intervention

On Friday, July 9, 2022, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for immediate multilateral action in three key areas: the accelerating climate emergency, the food, energy, and financial crisis, and the uneven recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a video message, Guterres told the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Bali, Indonesia, that stronger international cooperation was the only sustainable path to a peaceful, dependable, and prosperous world for all.
He declared the climate crisis the number one emergency, alerting that the fight to limit global increase to 1.5 ° c degrees Celsius "would be won or lost" by the end of the decade.
"You represent the world's major economies as well as approximately 80% of global emissions." "It is largely on your shoulders to mitigate the worst consequences of the climate crisis," he told the ministers.
"Wealthy countries must finally make good on their commitment to providing $100 billion in climate finance to developing countries beginning this year." "We also require a significant increase in adaptation and early warning systems," he added.
With the Ukraine conflict exacerbating other crises and driving up food and fertilizer prices, the UN chief warned of a "real risk" of multiple famines this year, with the potential for even worse in 2023.
Meanwhile, record-high energy prices are causing power outages and fuel shortages
"We must work together to stabilize global food and energy markets and to assist developing economies."
"Despite the war," he said, "Ukraine's food production, as well as Russia's food and fertilizer production, must be brought back into world markets."
The G20, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), international financial institutions, and the Secretary-General were all present in attendance at the summit.
